Honors Chemistry: Carefully read Section 4.1 and 4.2 (p 66 - 76) in your text. We will talk about this new material on atomic structure in class.
Chemistry: Study Section 3.1 and 3.2 (pages 100 - 109) in your text. Be prepared to answer questions about what you read.
Tomorrow in class I will introduce your 'Early Models of the Atom' project. It could also be called 'Early Heroes of Chemistry and Physics.' This is a small-group project. You will study in depth the experiments of one of the pioneers whose work led to modern Atomic Theory. You will recreate their great experiments for the class.

Unit Test on Monday, September 20
Monday's Unit Test will be on fundamental chemical math. The test in the Honors section will be more problem-intensive than in the non-Honors sections. Students (you) will need a calculator. The test will cover: scientific method; SI Units and the metric system; common SI prefixes; accuracy, precision and percentage error; scientific notation; calculation using scientific notation; significant digits, significant digits in calclulations, and rules for rounding using significant digits; temperature conversions; other conversion factors; dimensional analysis and chain calculations using conversion factors; and density calculations.
Homework for all sections is to study for these tests. Some of the problems on the test(s) may be similar to problems covered in class on Thursday and Friday.

Homework for September 7
Welcome back from the Labor Day holiday. You should all turn in your first Lab Report today. Your lab reports, your journalling, and any other writing you do in Chemistry will help you to become a better scientist or other professional. One mark of a professional is good writing. Clarity is the most important element of that writing: can someone else, reading your work, see what you saw and understand what you understood?
Honors Chemistry: We will have our first test on Safety, Lab procedure, and Chapters 1 first thing on Thursday. Some of your homework for tonight, and all of your homework for Wednesday will be review. We will also have some time for review in class on Wednesday.
For tomorrow, re-read Section 1.3 (pages 16-20), make flash cards for the vocabulary words for 'Elements' on page 21. Do problems 16-29 on page 22 and 23. Go back and review Sections 1.1 and 1.2. Your test will also include some practical work in the lab.
Chemistry: We will have our first test (a large quiz) on Safety, Lab procedure, and Chapters 1-2 first thing on Thursday. Your test will be different from the honors section. Most of it will be objective, although you may be expected to draw, and possibly interpret one or more things in the lab. Some of your homework for tonight, and all of your homework for Wednesday will be review. We will also have time for review in class on Wednesday.
For tomorrow, read pages 48-55. Make flash cards for the vocabulary words on pages 44, 48 and 53. Do problems 20-27 on page 52 and 28-33 on page 55. We will discuss all this in class on Wednesday.
